About Lotto America

Lotto America is a $1 game with a jackpot that starts at $2 million. Below the jackpot every prize is fixed: $5 for three white balls, $100 for four and $20,000 for five, more with the Star Ball. So every wheel guarantee has a known value.

The Star Ball is drawn from just 10 numbers, so it matches often: on its own it pays $2, which is twice the price of a play.

Matching two white balls without the Star Ball pays nothing in Lotto America, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Lotto America wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match ($5) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 528$8$241 in 46 draws, about once every 4 months
10 of 5217$17$511 in 23 draws, about once every 8 weeks
12 of 5229$29$871 in 14 draws, about once every 5 weeks
15 of 5255$55$1651 in 7.3 draws, about once every 2 weeks
18 of 5294$94$2821 in 4.6 draws, about once every 2 weeks

The cost per week covers all 3 draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 25,989,600 chance at the top prize and returns about $0.27 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Lotto America, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $8 to $94 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 46 draws to 1 in 4.6. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

Which Star Ball should I use?

Your choice. Putting the same Star Ball on every ticket means that if it's drawn, every ticket matches it. Mixing them means more of your tickets have a chance, but only one or two can match. On average the two pay the same.

How do I play these tickets?

Fill in a playslip line for each ticket at a lottery retailer, or enter them in your state lottery's app if it sells tickets online. Each state page explains the local rules.

Where can I play Lotto America?

In 16 states and DC: Delaware, District Of Columbia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia.

What is All Star Bonus?

For $1 more per play, a multiplier of 2x to 5x is drawn before each drawing and multiplies every prize except the jackpot, so $20,000 for five white balls can become $100,000. It adds $1 to every line of a wheel.
