About Mega Millions

Matching two white balls without the Mega Ball pays nothing in Mega Millions, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Mega Millions wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (at least $20) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 708$40$801 in 110 draws, about once every 13 months
10 of 7017$85$1701 in 54 draws, about once every 6 months
12 of 7029$145$2901 in 31 draws, about once every 4 months
15 of 7055$275$5501 in 16 draws, about once every 8 weeks
18 of 7094$470$9401 in 9.7 draws, about once every 5 weeks

The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Mega Millions any one number is drawn about once in 14 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 290,472,336 chance at the top prize and returns about $1.12 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Mega Millions, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $40 to $470 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 110 draws to 1 in 9.7. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

Which Mega Ball should I use?

Your choice. Putting the same Mega Ball on every ticket means that if it's drawn, every ticket matches it. Mixing them means more of your tickets have a chance, but only one or two can match. You can also choose several of your own and play the whole wheel once with each: when the Mega Ball drawn is one of them, the ticket with your guaranteed match has it too, but each one costs as much as the wheel. On average every ticket pays the same, whichever you choose.

How do I play these tickets?

Fill in a playslip line for each ticket at a lottery retailer, or enter them in your state lottery's app if it sells tickets online. Each state page explains the local rules.

Why do Mega Millions wheels cost more?

Since April 2025 every Mega Millions play costs $5 and includes a random 2x to 10x multiplier on non-jackpot prizes. A wheel needs the same number of tickets as it would for Powerball, but each one costs more. The prizes are bigger too: three white balls pays at least $20.
