What a New York Lotto wheel does

A wheel takes more numbers than fit on one line and spreads them across several tickets in a careful pattern. The pattern guarantees a minimum win whenever enough of the winning numbers are among the ones you picked.

For example, one 10-number wheel uses 10 tickets ($5 a draw). If three of the six winning numbers are among your 10, at least one ticket matches three (usually $1). With 10 numbers out of 59, that happens on 1 in 18 draws.

What it doesn't do

A wheel can't change the odds of the draw. Each line has the same 1 in 45,057,474 chance at the top prize as any other, and on average pays back about 40¢ of every dollar as prizes, jackpot included, whether you use a wheel, quick picks or birthdays.

What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped. Random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your favorite numbers. A wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them.

Matching two numbers pays nothing in New York Lotto, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

New York Lotto is sold two lines for $1, so wheels here cost half as much per line as Florida Lotto. If a wheel has an odd number of lines, the extra line on the last ticket is yours to fill however you like.

Every prize is shared among the winners. Three numbers has paid just $1 in every draw for the past year, so a three-number guarantee here mostly pays for itself. Four numbers usually pays about $26, and five about $1,500, which is where a wheel starts to matter.

Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. More numbers make the guarantee pay off more often, but they need more tickets.A wheel that guarantees a three-number match whenever three of your numbers are drawn costs $5 a draw with 10 numbers and $8 with 12. Wheels with weaker guarantees cost less. Office pools can afford bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

How do I play these tickets?

Print them and fill in a playslip line for each ticket at any New York Lotto retailer, or enter them in the lottery's app if it sells tickets online in your area.

What is the Bonus number?

After the six winning numbers, a seventh Bonus number is drawn from the ones left. You don't pick it: it only matters if you match five of the six winning numbers and your sixth number is the Bonus, which wins second prize.

How big does the jackpot get?

It rolls over until someone wins it. Over the past year it has ranged from about $2 million to $14 million, as an annuity paid over 25 years, or a smaller lump sum.

Is this site part of New York Lotto?

No. LotteryWheels.com is an independent site and doesn't sell tickets. Always check your tickets against the official results at nylottery.ny.gov.
