What a Take 5 wheel does
A wheel takes more numbers than fit on one line and spreads them across several tickets in a careful pattern. The pattern guarantees a minimum win whenever enough of the winning numbers are among the ones you picked.
For example, one 10-number wheel uses 17 tickets ($17 a draw). If three of the five winning numbers are among your 10, at least one ticket matches three (usually about $21). With 10 numbers out of 39, that happens on 1 in 10 draws.
What it doesn't do
A wheel can't change the odds of the draw. Each line has the same 1 in 575,757 chance at the top prize as any other, and on average pays back about 50¢ of every dollar as prizes, jackpot included, whether you use a wheel, quick picks or birthdays.
What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped. Random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your favorite numbers. A wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them.
Take 5 has only 39 numbers and two draws a day, so the draw lands on several of your numbers far more often than in Lotto or Powerball. Each wheel option above shows exactly how often its guarantee pays off.
There's no rolling jackpot. When nobody matches all five, the top prize money goes to the players who matched four in that same draw, which is why four numbers has paid up to about $1,500.
Take 5 prizes and odds
| Match | Prize | Odds per line |
|---|---|---|
| 5 numbers | Top prize, usually about $19,000 | 1 in 575,757 |
| 4 numbers | Varies, usually about $640 | 1 in 3,387 |
| 3 numbers | Varies, usually about $21 | 1 in 102.63 |
| 2 numbers | Free play | 1 in 9.62 |
All cash prizes are shared among the winners, so they change from draw to draw; "usually" figures are the median amounts paid in the past year. The Lottery's own estimates are higher because they assume one top-prize winner. There's no rolling jackpot: when nobody matches all five, the top prize goes to the 4-number winners in the same draw. Questions
How many numbers should I mark?
As many as your budget allows. More numbers make the guarantee pay off more often, but they need more tickets.A wheel that guarantees a three-number match whenever three of your numbers are drawn costs $17 a draw with 10 numbers and $29 with 12. Wheels with weaker guarantees cost less. Office pools can afford bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.
How do I play these tickets?
Print them and fill in a playslip line for each ticket at any Take 5 retailer, or enter them in the lottery's app if it sells tickets online in your area.
Midday or evening?
Take 5 is drawn at 2:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Choose midday, evening or both for each play; both draws cost $2 a line and give your numbers two chances a day.
What is Instant Win?
An optional $1 add-on that prints instant-win numbers on your ticket. It doesn't change your Take 5 numbers or the wheel.
Is this site part of Take 5?
No. LotteryWheels.com is an independent site and doesn't sell tickets. Always check your tickets against the official results at nylottery.ny.gov.
