About Lotto NZ
With only 40 numbers, Lotto NZ suits wheels well: a wheel's minimum match comes into play far more often than in a 6-from-49 or 6-from-59 game. Three numbers win 4 free lines, and Division 1 is a shared $1 million every draw.
Combo tickets play every combination of 8, 9 or 10 numbers: 28, 84 or 210 lines. A wheel plays a small part of those lines, chosen so that if enough of your numbers are drawn, at least one line still matches them. Combos are sold only in stores; a wheel can be entered in MyLotto as Pick Your Own tickets.
Matching two numbers pays nothing in Lotto NZ, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."
What Lotto NZ wheels cost
Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (4 free Lotto lines) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.
| Numbers you mark | Tickets | Cost per draw | Cost per week | How often the guarantee comes into play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 of 40 | 4 | $2.80 | $5.60 | 1 in 12 draws, about once every 6 weeks |
| 10 of 40 | 10 | $7 | $14 | 1 in 6.5 draws, about once every 3 weeks |
| 12 of 40 | 15 | $10.50 | $21 | 1 in 4.1 draws, about once every 2 weeks |
| 15 of 40 | 31 | $21.70 | $43.40 | 1 in 2.5 draws, about once a week or more |
| 18 of 40 | 48 | $33.60 | $67.20 | 57% draws, about once a week or more |
The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.
Lotto NZ Combo entries and wheels
A Combo entry plays every combination of the numbers you choose, at the full price of every line, so if all the winning numbers are among yours, it holds them. A wheel plays a few of those lines instead. If 3 of your numbers are drawn, at least one of its lines matches 3 (4 free Lotto lines); it can't promise more than that.
| Your numbers | Combo entry | Wheel: 3 if 3 are drawn | Wheel: 3 if 4 are drawn |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 28 lines, $19.60 | 4 lines, $2.80 | 3 lines, $2.80 |
| 9 | 84 lines, $58.80 | 7 lines, $4.90 | 3 lines, $2.80 |
| 10 | 210 lines, $147 | 10 lines, $7 | 4 lines, $2.80 |
Combo prices are the official prices, and so are the wheels'. No choice of lines changes the odds of any one line, or what entries pay back on average.
Key-number wheels
A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Lotto NZ any one number is drawn about once in 7 draws.
So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:
| Your numbers | Tickets | Cost per draw | Guarantee comes into play | Best normal wheel for the same money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 key + 8 others | 4 | $2.80 | 1 in 25 draws | 8 numbers, 4 tickets: 1 in 12 draws |
| 1 key + 12 others | 9 | $6.30 | 1 in 13 draws | 9 numbers, 7 tickets: 1 in 8.7 draws |
| 1 key + 16 others | 15 | $10.50 | 1 in 9.6 draws | 12 numbers, 15 tickets: 1 in 4.1 draws |
| 2 keys + 7 others | 2 | $2.80 | 1 in 91 draws | none this cheap |
| 2 keys + 11 others | 3 | $2.80 | 1 in 68 draws | none this cheap |
| 2 keys + 15 others | 4 | $2.80 | 1 in 59 draws | 8 numbers, 4 tickets: 1 in 12 draws |
To use one, mark your numbers in the tool above, then choose one or two of them as key numbers.
Lotto NZ prizes and odds
| Match | Prize | Odds per line |
|---|---|---|
| 6 numbers | Division 1: a share of $1 million | 1 in 3,838,380 |
| 5 numbers + Bonus Ball | Division 2: about $20,000 | 1 in 639,730 |
| 5 numbers | Division 3: about $600 | 1 in 19,386 |
| 4 numbers + Bonus Ball | Division 4: about $55 | 1 in 7,754 |
| 4 numbers | Division 5: about $30 | 1 in 484.64 |
| 3 numbers + Bonus Ball | Division 6: about $22 | 1 in 363.48 |
| 3 numbers | Division 7: 4 free Lotto lines | 1 in 35.18 |
Division 1 is $1 million every draw, shared by everyone who matches all six; it never rolls over. Division 7 is 4 free Lotto lines for the next draw. The other divisions share prize pools, so they vary; the amounts shown are Lotto NZ's averages. The Bonus Ball is drawn after the six numbers and counts when it matches one of your numbers that missed. Rules, prizes and odds were checked on October 5, 2026 against the official source; always confirm them, and your results, at MyLotto.
Can a wheel improve your odds?
No. Each line still has the same 1 in 3,838,380 chance at the top prize, and the same average return, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. How lottery wheels work.
Questions
How many numbers should I mark?
As many as your budget allows. In Lotto NZ, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $2.80 to $33.60 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 12 draws to 57%. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.
How do I play these tickets in New Zealand?
In a Lotto store, mark each line on a coupon by hand: machine-marked coupons aren't accepted. Or enter your lines in MyLotto (online or in the app) as Pick Your Own tickets of up to 20 lines, or save them as Favourites and have a store scan the QR code.
Can I add Powerball to these lines?
Yes. Powerball costs 80c more a line ($1.50 in all, at least 4 lines), and each line gets a Powerball number from 1 to 14. The line still plays Lotto, so the wheel's Lotto matches stand whatever Powerball you pick; matching the Powerball as well adds a Powerball prize on top. The Lotto Powerball page has wheels with Powerball numbers on every line.
