About Lotto Powerball

Lotto Powerball is Lotto with a Powerball number from 1 to 14 on every line, for 80c more a line. Each line still plays Lotto, so the wheel's Lotto prizes stand whatever Powerball you choose; when the Powerball matches too, the line also wins a Powerball prize. Since September 2026 the Powerball comes from 14 numbers, and two numbers plus the Bonus Ball and the Powerball win $12.

The wheel covers your Lotto numbers. For the Powerball, you can put the same number on every line, so that if it's drawn every winning line also wins its Powerball prize, or spread different numbers across the lines.

Matching two numbers without the Powerball pays nothing in Lotto Powerball, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Lotto Powerball wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (4 free Lotto lines, and $20 more with the Powerball) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 404$6$121 in 12 draws, about once every 6 weeks
10 of 4010$15$301 in 6.5 draws, about once every 3 weeks
12 of 4015$22.50$451 in 4.1 draws, about once every 2 weeks
15 of 4031$46.50$931 in 2.5 draws, about once a week or more
18 of 4048$72$14457% draws, about once a week or more

The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Lotto Powerball Combo entries and wheels

A Combo entry plays every combination of the numbers you choose, at the full price of every line, so if all the winning numbers are among yours, it holds them. A wheel plays a few of those lines instead. If 3 of your numbers are drawn, at least one of its lines matches 3 (4 free Lotto lines, and $20 more with the Powerball); it can't promise more than that.

984 lines, $1267 lines, $10.503 lines, $6
10210 lines, $31510 lines, $154 lines, $6

Combo prices are the official prices, and so are the wheels'. No choice of lines changes the odds of any one line, or what entries pay back on average.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Lotto Powerball any one number is drawn about once in 7 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

Every Lotto Powerball line plays Lotto as well, so a line that matches the Powerball wins the Powerball prize on top of its Lotto prize; the odds for each Lotto division count every line. The jackpot starts at $5 million and must be won once it reaches $60 million. Powerball Divisions 7 and 8 and Lotto Division 7 are fixed; the other prizes share pools, so they vary (the amounts shown are Lotto NZ's averages). The Bonus Ball is drawn from the numbers left and counts when it matches one of your numbers that missed. Rules, prizes and odds were checked on October 5, 2026 against the official source; always confirm them, and your results, at MyLotto.

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 53,737,320 chance at the top prize, and the same average return, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. How lottery wheels work.

Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Lotto Powerball, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $6 to $72 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 12 draws to 57%. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

Which Powerball should I use?

Your choice. Putting the same Powerball on every ticket means that if it's drawn, every ticket matches it. Mixing them means more of your tickets have a chance, but only one or two can match. On average the two pay the same.

How do I play these tickets in New Zealand?

In a Lotto store, mark each line on a coupon by hand: machine-marked coupons aren't accepted. Or enter your lines in MyLotto (online or in the app) as Pick Your Own tickets of up to 20 lines, or save them as Favourites and have a store scan the QR code.
