About Badger 5

Badger 5 has only 31 numbers, so the draw lands on several of yours often, and a wheel on 10 or 12 numbers catches three winning numbers on a good share of draws. Each option above shows exactly how often.

Its jackpot starts at $10,000 and is won in roughly one draw in four, often shared, so it usually stays in the tens of thousands. Below it, prizes are fixed: $50 for four numbers, $2 for three and $1 for two.

What Badger 5 wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match ($2) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

The cost per week covers all 7 draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 169,911 chance at the top prize and returns about $0.23 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Badger 5, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $8 to $94 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 11 draws to 66%. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

Does a wheel break Wisconsin's rule against guaranteed jackpots?

No. Wisconsin voids any play or set of plays that would guarantee the jackpot, which means buying every possible combination. A wheel only combines the numbers you chose, so it can only win the jackpot if the winning numbers are among yours.

Can I play online?

No. Wisconsin Lottery tickets are sold only in stores, for cash, and couriers aren't allowed. The free WI Lottery app can turn your numbers into a digital playslip (a QR code) that the clerk or a lottery vending machine scans.
