About South African Lotto

Lotto went back to 6 numbers from 52 in June 2026, when Sizekhaya took over the National Lottery; it had been 6 from 58 since September 2025. Three numbers win R20, and every prize from Division 4 down is a fixed amount, so you know what a wheel's guarantee is worth.

Multiplay boards, new in June 2026, play every combination of 7 or 8 numbers: 7 or 28 boards at R5 each. A wheel plays a few of those boards, chosen so that if enough of your numbers are drawn, at least one board still matches them.

Matching two numbers without the Bonus Ball pays nothing in South African Lotto, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What South African Lotto wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (R20) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 524R20R401 in 25 draws, about once every 3 months
10 of 5210R50R1001 in 13 draws, about once every 6 weeks
12 of 5215R75R1501 in 7.9 draws, about once every 4 weeks
15 of 5231R155R3101 in 4.5 draws, about once every 2 weeks
18 of 5248R240R4801 in 2.9 draws, about once a week or more

The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

South African Lotto Multiplay entries and wheels

A Multiplay entry plays every combination of the numbers you choose, at the full price of every board, so if all the winning numbers are among yours, it holds them. A wheel plays a few of those boards instead. If 3 of your numbers are drawn, at least one of its boards matches 3 (R20); it can't promise more than that.

Multiplay prices are the official prices, and so are the wheels'. No choice of boards changes the odds of any one board, or what entries pay back on average.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in South African Lotto any one number is drawn about once in 9 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

Prize amounts are as published by South African lottery information sites; the National Lottery's own rules weren't available to check. Divisions 4 to 8 are fixed amounts; the top three share prize pools, so they vary. The Bonus Ball is drawn from the numbers left and counts when it matches one of your numbers that missed. LOTTO PLUS 1 and LOTTO 5 MAX are separate draws on the same boards, with fixed prizes half of these. Rules, prizes and odds were checked on October 9, 2026 against the Absa and Nedbank lottery pages and published prize tables (the National Lottery's own site can't be read from outside South Africa); always confirm them, and your results, at the National Lottery.

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 20,358,520 chance at the top prize, and the same average return, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In South African Lotto, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from R20 to R240 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 25 draws to 1 in 2.9. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

How do I play these tickets in South Africa?

Buy at a National Lottery retailer, from the National Lottery online, or in a banking app: Absa and Nedbank both sell LOTTO, POWERBALL and DAILY LOTTO. Enter each line of a wheel as a board of its own.

Can I add LOTTO PLUS 1 and LOTTO 5 MAX?

Yes. LOTTO PLUS 1 costs R2.50 more a board, and LOTTO 5 MAX another R2.50 (it needs PLUS 1), so each board can play all three draws for R10. Each draw has its own winning numbers, so the wheel's guarantee applies to each draw separately. The add-ons' fixed prizes are half of Lotto's: R10 for three numbers and R100 for four.
