About South African PowerBall
South Africa's PowerBall is its own game, not the American one: 5 numbers from 50 plus a PowerBall from 1 to 16 that you pick for each board. In June 2026 the PowerBall range went down from 20 to 16 and a board went up from R5 to R10. Three numbers win R100 with or without the PowerBall.
The wheel covers your five main numbers. For the PowerBall, you can put the same number on every board, so that if it's drawn every winning board also wins its PowerBall prize, or spread different numbers across the boards. A Multiplay board takes only one PowerBall.
Matching two numbers without the PowerBall pays nothing in South African PowerBall, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."
What South African PowerBall wheels cost
Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (R100) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.
| Numbers you mark | Tickets | Cost per draw | Cost per week | How often the guarantee comes into play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 of 50 | 8 | R80 | R160 | 1 in 41 draws, about once every 5 months |
| 10 of 50 | 17 | R170 | R340 | 1 in 21 draws, about once every 2 months |
| 12 of 50 | 29 | R290 | R580 | 1 in 12 draws, about once every 6 weeks |
| 15 of 50 | 55 | R550 | R1,100 | 1 in 6.6 draws, about once every 3 weeks |
| 18 of 50 | 94 | R940 | R1,880 | 1 in 4.1 draws, about once every 2 weeks |
The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.
South African PowerBall Multiplay entries and wheels
A Multiplay entry plays every combination of the numbers you choose, at the full price of every board, so if all the winning numbers are among yours, it holds them. A wheel plays a few of those boards instead. If 3 of your numbers are drawn, at least one of its boards matches 3 (R100); it can't promise more than that.
| Your numbers | Multiplay entry | Wheel: 3 if 3 are drawn | Wheel: 3 if 4 are drawn |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 boards, R60 | 4 boards, R40 | – |
| 7 | 21 boards, R210 | 5 boards, R50 | 3 boards, R30 |
Multiplay prices are the official prices, and so are the wheels'. No choice of boards changes the odds of any one board, or what entries pay back on average.
Key-number wheels
A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in South African PowerBall any one number is drawn about once in 10 draws.
So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:
| Your numbers | Tickets | Cost per draw | Guarantee comes into play | Best normal wheel for the same money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 key + 8 others | 6 | R60 | 1 in 84 draws | 7 numbers, 5 tickets: 1 in 64 draws |
| 1 key + 12 others | 12 | R120 | 1 in 40 draws | 9 numbers, 12 tickets: 1 in 29 draws |
| 1 key + 16 others | 20 | R200 | 1 in 25 draws | 11 numbers, 20 tickets: 1 in 16 draws |
| 2 keys + 7 others | 3 | R30 | 1 in 319 draws | none this cheap |
| 2 keys + 11 others | 4 | R40 | 1 in 222 draws | 6 numbers, 4 tickets: 1 in 108 draws |
| 2 keys + 15 others | 5 | R50 | 1 in 179 draws | 7 numbers, 5 tickets: 1 in 64 draws |
To use one, mark your numbers in the tool above, then choose one or two of them as key numbers.

Prize amounts are as published by South African lottery information sites; the National Lottery's own rules weren't available to check. You pick the PowerBall from 1 to 16 for each board. Divisions 4 to 9 are fixed amounts; the top three share what's left of the prize pool, so they vary. POWERBALL XTRA is a separate draw on the same boards, with fixed prizes half of these. Rules, prizes and odds were checked on October 9, 2026 against the Absa and Nedbank lottery pages and published prize tables (the National Lottery's own site can't be read from outside South Africa); always confirm them, and your results, at the National Lottery.
Can a wheel improve your odds?
No. Each line still has the same 1 in 33,900,160 chance at the top prize, and the same average return, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. How lottery wheels work.
Questions
How many numbers should I mark?
As many as your budget allows. In South African PowerBall, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from R80 to R940 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 41 draws to 1 in 4.1. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.
Which PowerBall should I use?
Your choice. Putting the same PowerBall on every ticket means that if it's drawn, every ticket matches it. Mixing them means more of your tickets have a chance, but only one or two can match. On average the two pay the same.
How do I play these tickets in South Africa?
Buy at a National Lottery retailer, from the National Lottery online, or in a banking app: Absa and Nedbank both sell LOTTO, POWERBALL and DAILY LOTTO. Enter each line of a wheel as a board of its own.
What about POWERBALL XTRA?
XTRA costs R5 more a board and plays the same numbers in a second draw straight after PowerBall, with its own winning numbers. Its fixed prizes are half of PowerBall's (R50 for three numbers), and its jackpot is reported to pass down to the next divisions if nobody wins it in the last draw of a month.
