About Washington Lotto

Washington Lotto plays are sold in pairs: $1 buys two, and you pick the numbers on both. So a wheel costs 50¢ a line, and a wheel with an odd number of lines leaves one play to spare.

Below the jackpot, prizes are fixed: $1,000 for five numbers, $30 for four and $3 for three. The jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it.

Matching two numbers pays nothing in Washington Lotto, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Washington Lotto wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match ($3) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 494$2$61 in 21 draws, about once every 7 weeks
10 of 4910$5$151 in 11 draws, about once every 4 weeks
12 of 4915$8$241 in 6.8 draws, about once every 2 weeks
15 of 4931$16$481 in 3.9 draws, about once a week or more
18 of 4948$24$721 in 2.6 draws, about once a week or more

The cost per week covers all 3 draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 13,983,816 chance at the top prize and returns about $0.10 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Washington Lotto, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $2 to $24 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 21 draws to 1 in 2.6. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

Does a wheel break Washington's rule against buying up a game?

No. Washington doesn't allow buying combinations that would guarantee the jackpot or grand prize, which means buying every possible combination. A wheel only combines the numbers you chose, so it can only win the top prize if the winning numbers are among yours.

Can I take this printout to the store?

Not as a playslip: Washington doesn't accept photocopied or printed playslips. Copy your lines onto official playslips, or read them to the clerk. Tickets are sold only in stores; online sales and couriers aren't allowed.
