About Lottario

Each $1 Lottario play has two lines, but you can only choose the first; the second is always computer-picked. So a wheel needs one $1 play for each of its lines, and every play adds a random line on top.

Lottario draws 6 numbers from 45, fewer than a 6/49 game, so a wheel covers more of the field. Below the jackpot every prize is fixed, from $4 for three numbers to $10,000 for five plus the Bonus Number. The Early Bird draw is separate from your numbers.

Matching two numbers without the Bonus Number pays nothing in Lottario, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Lottario wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match ($4) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 454$4$41 in 17 draws, about once every 4 months
10 of 4510$10$101 in 8.9 draws, about once every 9 weeks
12 of 4515$15$151 in 5.5 draws, about once every 5 weeks
15 of 4531$31$311 in 3.2 draws, about once every 3 weeks
18 of 4548$48$481 in 2.2 draws, about once every 2 weeks

The cost per week covers the one draw a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Lottario any one number is drawn about once in 8 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

The jackpot starts at $250,000 and grows until it's won; every other prize is fixed. The Bonus Number counts when it matches one of your numbers that missed, and with none of the six it wins a free play. Odds here are per line; OLG quotes them per $1 play of two lines. Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 8,145,060 chance at the top prize and returns about $0.19 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Lottario, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $4 to $48 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 17 draws to 1 in 2.2. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

How do I play these tickets in Ontario?

Copy each line onto an OLG selection slip, or read your numbers to the retailer: OLG takes 'slipless' plays. You can also buy online at OLG.ca or in the OLG app while you're in Ontario.

Does the lottery sell wheels?

Only full wheels. Canadian lotteries sell Combination or Combo plays, which buy every possible line from your numbers: 7 numbers is 7 lines ($7), 8 is 28 lines ($28) and 9 is 84 lines ($84). The wheels here cover the same numbers with far fewer lines, each with a stated guarantee.
