About Lotto Max

A $6 Lotto Max play has four lines of seven numbers, but outside Québec you can choose only the first; the other three are always computer-picked. So a wheel needs one $6 play for each of its lines, and every play adds three random lines on top.

Four numbers, or three plus the Bonus Number, pay a fixed $20, and three numbers a free play; the bigger prizes share pools and vary. The MaxMillions and MAXPLUS prizes are extra draws that a line has to match exactly, so a wheel doesn't change your chances of those.

Matching two numbers without the Bonus Number pays nothing in Lotto Max, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Lotto Max wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (a free play) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 524$24$481 in 16 draws, about once every 8 weeks
10 of 526$36$721 in 8.3 draws, about once every 4 weeks
12 of 5211$66$1321 in 5.2 draws, about once every 3 weeks
15 of 5215$90$1801 in 3.1 draws, about once every 2 weeks
18 of 5232$192$3841 in 2.2 draws, about once a week or more

The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

The jackpot starts at $10 million and can grow to $90 million. The five- and six-number prizes, and four plus the Bonus Number, share pools, so they vary; the amounts shown are Loto-Québec's averages. The Bonus Number counts when it matches one of your numbers that missed. Odds here are per line; the lotteries quote them per $6 play of four lines. Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 133,784,560 chance at the top prize, and the same average return, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Lotto Max, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $24 to $192 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 16 draws to 1 in 2.2. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

How do I play these tickets?

Fill in a selection slip for each line at any lottery retailer, or buy online from your provincial lottery while you're in the province: OLG.ca in Ontario, PlayNow.com in British Columbia and Manitoba, PlayAlberta.ca in Alberta, the Lotto Spot! app across Western Canada, alc.ca in Atlantic Canada and lotoquebec.com in Québec.

Can I choose all four lines in Québec?

Loto-Québec's rules let a play be chosen by you, by the computer or a mix of both, but they don't say whether a regular slip lets you choose all four lines. Ask your retailer: if you can, each wheel line costs $1.50 instead of $6.

Does the lottery sell wheels?

Only full wheels. OLG's 8-number Combination Play is 8 lines for $48 and its 9-number one 36 lines for $216, each line with three random lines added. The wheels here cover the same numbers with fewer lines, each with a stated guarantee.
