About Québec 49

Québec 49 has a fixed $2 million top prize, shared if several tickets match all six, and fixed prizes below it: $75,000 for five plus the Bonus Number, $750 for five, $75 for four, $10 for three and $5 for two plus the Bonus Number.

At $1 a line it's the cheapest 6/49 game to wheel in Québec. Double Jeu 49 plays the same numbers in Lotto 6/49 too, for $4 a line.

Matching two numbers without the Bonus Number pays nothing in Québec 49, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Québec 49 wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match ($10) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 494$4$81 in 21 draws, about once every 2 months
10 of 4910$10$201 in 11 draws, about once every 6 weeks
12 of 4915$15$301 in 6.8 draws, about once every 3 weeks
15 of 4931$31$621 in 3.9 draws, about once every 2 weeks
18 of 4948$48$961 in 2.6 draws, about once a week or more

The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Québec 49 any one number is drawn about once in 8 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

The $2 million top prize is shared among that draw's winners, and the $75,000 prize is limited to $450,000 in total per draw; every other prize is fixed. The Bonus Number counts when it matches one of your numbers that missed. Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 13,983,816 chance at the top prize and returns about $0.36 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Québec 49, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $4 to $48 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 21 draws to 1 in 2.6. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

How do I play these tickets in Québec?

Copy each line onto a Loto-Québec selection slip, or buy online at lotoquebec.com or in the Loto-Québec app while you're in Québec.

Does the lottery sell wheels?

Only full wheels. Canadian lotteries sell Combination or Combo plays, which buy every possible line from your numbers: 7 numbers is 7 lines ($7), 8 is 28 lines ($28) and 9 is 84 lines ($84). The wheels here cover the same numbers with far fewer lines, each with a stated guarantee.
