About Lotto 6/49
Every $3 Lotto 6/49 play is one line of six numbers for the Classic Draw, plus a computer-picked Gold Ball number for a separate draw. A wheel arranges your Classic Draw numbers; the Gold Ball draw is luck either way.
The Classic jackpot is a fixed $5 million, shared if several tickets match all six. Three numbers pay $10, two plus the Bonus Number $5 and two alone a free play, so the three-number guarantee has a known value. The bigger prizes vary with sales and the number of winners.
What Lotto 6/49 wheels cost
Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match ($10) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.
| Numbers you mark | Tickets | Cost per draw | Cost per week | How often the guarantee comes into play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 of 49 | 4 | $12 | $24 | 1 in 21 draws, about once every 2 months |
| 10 of 49 | 10 | $30 | $60 | 1 in 11 draws, about once every 6 weeks |
| 12 of 49 | 15 | $45 | $90 | 1 in 6.8 draws, about once every 3 weeks |
| 15 of 49 | 31 | $93 | $186 | 1 in 3.9 draws, about once every 2 weeks |
| 18 of 49 | 48 | $144 | $288 | 1 in 2.6 draws, about once a week or more |
The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.
Match-2 wheels: more numbers for fewer tickets
In Lotto 6/49, two numbers on one line wins a free play. A match-2 wheel guarantees that whenever at least two of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark, at least one ticket matches two. That takes far fewer tickets than a three-number guarantee, so the same money covers many more numbers.
It doesn't change your odds or your average return: whichever tickets you play, two-number prizes give back about 12% of what you spend. What it changes is how regularly those small wins come and, with more numbers marked, how often three or four winning numbers land among yours by luck.
| Numbers you mark | Tickets | Cost per draw | A match-3 wheel would need | How often the guarantee comes into play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 of 49 | 4 | $12 | 10 tickets | 35% of draws, about once a week or more |
| 12 of 49 | 6 | $18 | 15 tickets | 46% of draws, about once a week or more |
| 15 of 49 | 10 | $30 | 31 tickets | 61% of draws, about once a week or more |
| 20 of 49 | 16 | $48 | 71 tickets | 80% of draws, about 2 times a week |
| 25 of 49 | 23 | $69 | more than 300 tickets | 91% of draws, about 2 times a week |
| 30 of 49 | 31 | $93 | more than 300 tickets | 97% of draws, about 2 times a week |

Key-number wheels
A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Lotto 6/49 any one number is drawn about once in 8 draws.
So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:
| Your numbers | Tickets | Cost per draw | Guarantee comes into play | Best normal wheel for the same money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 key + 8 others | 4 | $12 | 1 in 43 draws | 8 numbers, 4 tickets: 1 in 21 draws |
| 1 key + 12 others | 9 | $27 | 1 in 22 draws | 9 numbers, 7 tickets: 1 in 15 draws |
| 1 key + 16 others | 15 | $45 | 1 in 15 draws | 12 numbers, 15 tickets: 1 in 6.8 draws |
| 2 keys + 7 others | 2 | $6 | 1 in 161 draws | none this cheap |
| 2 keys + 11 others | 3 | $9 | 1 in 117 draws | none this cheap |
| 2 keys + 15 others | 4 | $12 | 1 in 98 draws | 8 numbers, 4 tickets: 1 in 21 draws |
To use one, mark your numbers in the tool above, then choose one or two of them as key numbers.

The $5 million Classic jackpot is fixed, and shared if several tickets match all six. The five- and four-number prizes share a pool, so they vary; the amounts shown are Loto-Québec's averages. The Bonus Number counts when it matches one of your numbers that missed. Every play's Gold Ball number is a separate draw that your numbers don't affect. Can a wheel improve your odds?
No. Each line still has the same 1 in 13,983,816 chance at the top prize, and the same average return, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions
How many numbers should I mark?
As many as your budget allows. In Lotto 6/49, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $12 to $144 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 21 draws to 1 in 2.6. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.
How do I play these tickets?
Fill in a selection slip for each line at any lottery retailer, or buy online from your provincial lottery while you're in the province: OLG.ca in Ontario, PlayNow.com in British Columbia and Manitoba, PlayAlberta.ca in Alberta, the Lotto Spot! app across Western Canada, alc.ca in Atlantic Canada and lotoquebec.com in Québec.
Does the lottery sell wheels?
Only full wheels. Canadian lotteries sell Combination or Combo plays, which buy every possible line from your numbers: 7 numbers is 7 lines ($21), 8 is 28 lines ($84) and 9 is 84 lines ($252). The wheels here cover the same numbers with far fewer lines, each with a stated guarantee.
