About Western 649

Western 649 is sold in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. $1 buys one line, with a fixed $2 million top prize, shared if several tickets match all six.

Below it every prize is fixed: $500 for five numbers ($50,000 with the Bonus Number, shared), $50 for four, $10 for three, $3 for two plus the Bonus Number and a free play for two.

What Western 649 wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match ($10) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 494$4$81 in 21 draws, about once every 2 months
10 of 4910$10$201 in 11 draws, about once every 6 weeks
12 of 4915$15$301 in 6.8 draws, about once every 3 weeks
15 of 4931$31$621 in 3.9 draws, about once every 2 weeks
18 of 4948$48$961 in 2.6 draws, about once a week or more

The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Match-2 wheels: more numbers for fewer tickets

In Western 649, two numbers on one line wins a free play. A match-2 wheel guarantees that whenever at least two of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark, at least one ticket matches two. That takes far fewer tickets than a three-number guarantee, so the same money covers many more numbers.

It doesn't change your odds or your average return: whichever tickets you play, two-number prizes give back about 12% of what you spend. What it changes is how regularly those small wins come and, with more numbers marked, how often three or four winning numbers land among yours by luck.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Western 649 any one number is drawn about once in 8 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 13,983,816 chance at the top prize and returns about $0.41 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Western 649, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from $4 to $48 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 21 draws to 1 in 2.6. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

How do I play these tickets in Western Canada?

Copy each line onto a WCLC selection slip in pencil, or build them in the Lotto Spot! app, which turns them into a QR code the retailer scans. The app also sells single-draw tickets anywhere in the region, and Albertans can buy at PlayAlberta.ca and Manitobans at PlayNow.com.

Does the lottery sell wheels?

Only full wheels. Canadian lotteries sell Combination or Combo plays, which buy every possible line from your numbers: 7 numbers is 7 lines ($7), 8 is 28 lines ($28) and 9 is 84 lines ($84). The wheels here cover the same numbers with far fewer lines, each with a stated guarantee.
