About Powerball (UK)

UK Powerball plays the US Powerball draw, in the early hours UK time, at £4 a line. The jackpot is shared with US winners, but the other prizes are the UK's own, including £8 for two white balls, which the US game doesn't pay.

With 69 white balls, a three-number guarantee comes into play less often than in a smaller game, and the middle prizes vary. The £8 for two white balls makes match-2 wheels worth a look. Results here use the UK prizes.

What Powerball (UK) wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (a share of a prize fund) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 698£32£961 in 105 draws, about once every 8 months
10 of 6917£68£2041 in 52 draws, about once every 4 months
12 of 6929£116£3481 in 30 draws, about once every 2 months
15 of 6955£220£6601 in 15 draws, about once every 5 weeks
18 of 6994£376£1,1281 in 9.3 draws, about once every 3 weeks

The cost per week covers all 3 draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Match-2 wheels: more numbers for fewer tickets

In Powerball (UK), two numbers on one line pays £8, twice what the line costs. A match-2 wheel guarantees that whenever at least two of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark, at least one ticket matches two. That takes far fewer tickets than a three-number guarantee, so the same money covers many more numbers.

It doesn't change your odds or your average return: whichever tickets you play, two-number prizes give back about 7% of what you spend. What it changes is how regularly those small wins come and, with more numbers marked, how often three or four winning numbers land among yours by luck.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Powerball (UK) any one number is drawn about once in 14 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

The draw is the US Powerball draw, but UK prizes are the UK's own: the jackpot is shared with US winners and paid over 30 years, five white balls pay a fixed £1,000,000 and two pay £8, and the other prizes share funds set aside from UK sales, so they vary. Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 292,201,338 chance at the top prize, and the same average return, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Powerball (UK), going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from £32 to £376 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 105 draws to 1 in 9.3. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

Which Powerball should I use?

Your choice. Putting the same Powerball on every ticket means that if it's drawn, every ticket matches it. Mixing them means more of your tickets have a chance, but only one or two can match. On average the two pay the same.

How do I play these tickets in the UK?

In shops, only official National Lottery play slips are accepted, so copy each line onto a play slip by hand. You can also buy online at national-lottery.co.uk or in the National Lottery app if you live in the UK or the Isle of Man and you're there when you play.
