About Set For Life
Set For Life's prizes are all fixed: £5 for two numbers, £20 for three, £50 for four and £10,000 a month for a year for five, with more when the Life Ball matches too. The top prize is £10,000 a month for 30 years.
Two numbers win £5 on a £1.50 line, so match-2 wheels make sense here: they guarantee a prize whenever two of your numbers come up, for far fewer lines than a three-number guarantee.
What Set For Life wheels cost
Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (£20) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.
| Numbers you mark | Tickets | Cost per draw | Cost per week | How often the guarantee comes into play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 of 47 | 8 | £12 | £24 | 1 in 35 draws, about once every 4 months |
| 10 of 47 | 17 | £25.50 | £51 | 1 in 17 draws, about once every 9 weeks |
| 12 of 47 | 29 | £43.50 | £87 | 1 in 10 draws, about once every 5 weeks |
| 15 of 47 | 55 | £82.50 | £165 | 1 in 5.6 draws, about once every 3 weeks |
| 18 of 47 | 94 | £141 | £282 | 1 in 3.6 draws, about once every 2 weeks |
The cost per week covers both draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.
Match-2 wheels: more numbers for fewer tickets
In Set For Life, two numbers on one line pays £5, 3.3 times what the line costs. A match-2 wheel guarantees that whenever at least two of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark, at least one ticket matches two. That takes far fewer tickets than a three-number guarantee, so the same money covers many more numbers.
It doesn't change your odds or your average return: whichever tickets you play, two-number prizes give back about 22% of what you spend. What it changes is how regularly those small wins come and, with more numbers marked, how often three or four winning numbers land among yours by luck.
| Numbers you mark | Tickets | Cost per draw | A match-3 wheel would need | How often the guarantee comes into play |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 of 47 | 6 | £9 | 17 tickets | 29% of draws, about once every 2 weeks |
| 12 of 47 | 9 | £13.50 | 29 tickets | 38% of draws, about once a week or more |
| 15 of 47 | 13 | £19.50 | 55 tickets | 52% of draws, about once a week or more |
| 20 of 47 | 21 | £31.50 | 133 tickets | 72% of draws, about once a week or more |
| 25 of 47 | 30 | £45 | more than 300 tickets | 86% of draws, about 2 times a week |
| 30 of 47 | 48 | £72 | more than 300 tickets | 95% of draws, about 2 times a week |

Key-number wheels
A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Set For Life any one number is drawn about once in 9 draws.
So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:
| Your numbers | Tickets | Cost per draw | Guarantee comes into play | Best normal wheel for the same money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 key + 8 others | 6 | £9 | 1 in 70 draws | 7 numbers, 5 tickets: 1 in 53 draws |
| 1 key + 12 others | 12 | £18 | 1 in 34 draws | 9 numbers, 12 tickets: 1 in 24 draws |
| 1 key + 16 others | 20 | £30 | 1 in 22 draws | 11 numbers, 20 tickets: 1 in 13 draws |
| 2 keys + 7 others | 3 | £4.50 | 1 in 267 draws | none this cheap |
| 2 keys + 11 others | 4 | £6 | 1 in 187 draws | 6 numbers, 4 tickets: 1 in 90 draws |
| 2 keys + 15 others | 5 | £7.50 | 1 in 151 draws | 7 numbers, 5 tickets: 1 in 53 draws |
To use one, mark your numbers in the tool above, then choose one or two of them as key numbers.
Set For Life prizes and odds
| Match | Prize | Odds per line |

| 5 numbers + Life Ball | £10,000 a month for 30 years | 1 in 15,339,390 |
| 5 numbers | £10,000 a month for a year | 1 in 1,704,377 |
| 4 numbers + Life Ball | £250 | 1 in 73,045 |
| 4 numbers | £50 | 1 in 8,116 |
| 3 numbers + Life Ball | £30 | 1 in 1,782 |

| 2 numbers + Life Ball | £10 | 1 in 133.62 |
| 2 numbers | £5 | 1 in 14.85 |
Every prize is fixed. The top prize is £10,000 a month for 30 years and the second £10,000 a month for a year; average return counts the second at its £120,000 total. The Life Ball alone, or with one number, wins nothing. Rules, prizes and odds were checked on October 4, 2026 against the official source; always confirm them, and your results, at national-lottery.co.uk.
Can a wheel improve your odds?
No. Each line still has the same 1 in 15,339,390 chance at the top prize and returns about £0.61 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. How lottery wheels work.
Questions
How many numbers should I mark?
As many as your budget allows. In Set For Life, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from £12 to £141 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 35 draws to 1 in 3.6. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.
Which Life Ball should I use?
Your choice. Putting the same Life Ball on every ticket means that if it's drawn, every ticket matches it. Mixing them means more of your tickets have a chance, but only one or two can match. On average the two pay the same.
How do I play these tickets in the UK?
In shops, only official National Lottery play slips are accepted, so copy each line onto a play slip by hand. You can also buy online at national-lottery.co.uk or in the National Lottery app if you live in the UK or the Isle of Man and you're there when you play.
