About Thunderball

Every Thunderball prize is fixed: £10 for three numbers, £100 for four, £5,000 for five, and more when the Thunderball matches too, up to £500,000. That makes every wheel guarantee worth a known amount.

The Thunderball is picked from 1 to 14 and pays on its own (£3), so it's worth choosing yours with care: the same Thunderball on every line, or several spread across your lines. Drawn four times a week, Thunderball gives a wheel plenty of chances.

Matching two numbers without the Thunderball pays nothing in Thunderball, so every wheel here guarantees at least a three-number match. Be wary of any system that promises "two numbers every time."

What Thunderball wheels cost

Each of these wheels guarantees a three-number match (£10) whenever at least three of the winning numbers are among the ones you mark. The more numbers you mark, the more often that happens, and the more tickets it takes.

Numbers you markTicketsCost per drawCost per weekHow often the guarantee comes into play
8 of 398£8£321 in 20 draws, about once every 5 weeks
10 of 3917£17£681 in 10 draws, about once every 3 weeks
12 of 3929£29£1161 in 6.3 draws, about once every 2 weeks
15 of 3955£55£2201 in 3.6 draws, about once a week or more
18 of 3994£94£3761 in 2.4 draws, about 2 times a week

The cost per week covers all 4 draws a week. The tool above also has cheaper wheels with weaker guarantees, and bigger ones that guarantee four or five numbers.

Key-number wheels

A key number goes on every ticket, and a smaller wheel covers the rest of your numbers. That cuts the cost a lot, which is why key wheels are popular. The catch is that the guarantee only counts in draws where your key is drawn, and in Thunderball any one number is drawn about once in 8 draws.

So for the same money, a normal wheel's guarantee comes into play more often. Here are three-number guarantees side by side:

Can a wheel improve your odds?

No. Each line still has the same 1 in 8,060,598 chance at the top prize and returns about £0.47 in other prizes on average, however you choose its numbers. What a wheel changes is how your wins are grouped: random tickets can all miss even when the draw lands on your numbers, and a wheel makes sure at least one ticket catches them. Questions

How many numbers should I mark?

As many as your budget allows. In Thunderball, going from 8 to 18 numbers takes the cost from £8 to £94 a draw, and the three-number guarantee from 1 in 20 draws to 1 in 2.4. Lottery pools can afford the bigger wheels, which is where wheels make the most sense.

Which Thunderball should I use?

Your choice. Putting the same Thunderball on every ticket means that if it's drawn, every ticket matches it. Mixing them means more of your tickets have a chance, but only one or two can match. On average the two pay the same.

How do I play these tickets in the UK?

In shops, only official National Lottery play slips are accepted, so copy each line onto a play slip by hand. You can also buy online at national-lottery.co.uk or in the National Lottery app if you live in the UK or the Isle of Man and you're there when you play.
